Companies often pay for the credentials that move you up, because they'd rather promote than hire. This is the part almost nobody knows.

More of every workplace is automated each year. All of it needs people to install it, program it and keep it running. More automation has meant more technicians, not fewer.

Is a technician career a good choice for my child?
It can be, especially for kids who like figuring out how things work. Pay grows with skill: in Georgia, maintenance technicians start around $44,730 and the median is $61,130 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), and the state projects 20% growth by 2034.
Does my child need a four-year degree?
Usually not. A certificate, short course or apprenticeship is the normal starting point. In construction, most roles start with a paid apprenticeship.

For 18 in-demand programs, the HOPE Grant and HOPE Career Grant together cover tuition at all 22 Georgia technical colleges. Families still pay fees and equipment.
